I can’t stop singing that dopey 80’s tune. But, it pretty well describes my morning. I was still having vertigo issues and the medicine I took the night before made me drowsy to boot. I actually went back to bed for a bit in the morning, too. Don’t like that feeling, but I had to do it. Anyway, I finally felt decent enough to make breakfast. I went with Chobani nonfat yogurt sweetened with NuStevia and topped with strawberry syrup, pomegranate arils and granola crumbs…
Really good! I loved the crunchy addition of the pomegranate arils (aka seeds!). This is the season for pomegranates and I picked one up at the supermarket the other day along with a cool brochure from the POM people with instructions on how to open one. I have always just hacked away at it, but now I know the “proper way” to open this beautiful guy…
and you can, too…
It worked perfectly and I got many more arils, especially non-butchered ones, than when I just hacked away at it –LOL!
I slowly worked on some house cleaning, then realized that I was starving and ready for lunch. When I’m like that, the first thing that jumps at me is what I choose. Today, leftover pizza was the winner…
With some awesome cantaloupe and grapes. Hmmm… I miss summer:(
I spent some time doing research on my vertigo diagnosis. I love doing research (it’s the old paralegal in me) and I love the easy access to all info via the Internet. It’s so easy to come up with questions for doctors when you have info at your fingertips! Anywho, what I found was a bit disheartening. Without getting into a bunch of medical mumbo jumbo, I basically found that there is no specific, guaranteed cause or treatment for Benign Positional Vertigo. The general treatment is a series of exercises or maneuvers that the doctor performs to help move debris from your inner ear to a less sensitive place within your head. Many of these exercises I can do as a home treatment. So, I decided that I would try to do these and see if it would rectify the situation. There is a decent success rate with doing these, however, BPV may reoccur. But, I’m willing to try it so as not to have to take any medication (Antivert) which, oddly enough, has a side effect of possible dizziness!!! Huh??? The disappointing part is that while doing these maneuvers, I have to be careful not to put myself in a position that’s counterproductive to moving the debris – no leaning too far back or flat, no bending over with head down, no sports activities involving lying flat (weight bench, yoga, pilates) or too much jostling of the head (RUNNING!!) and I need to sleep propped up on pillows for a bit. For now, running is out. Major bummer since I was all juiced up to start racking up my mileage :( But, if I’m going to lead a “healthy” lifestyle, I have to do ALL the things needed to keep me healthy which includes paying attention to my body’s needs. So, I may be benched for now, but hopefully not for long!
I felt a little frustrated after my research session and I took it out on myself by eating!! Aaaah! I made up some homemade almond butter…
and ate a whole lot of it! Then I snacked on most of these guys…
and there may have been a few Cheez-Its involved, too. Moving on…
I finished off the whole shebang with a hearty, carby bowl of Creamy Bowties with Asparagus…
made with Chavrie goat cheese, parmesan and a bit of milk. YUM!
Have a great day, everyone!!!

That's a great lesson in poms! Thanks, I will definitely be using that technique in the future. Yummy pics as always Marisa!
Sorry to hear that you're still suffering from the vertigo. I hope the exercises help.
I lurve pomegranates. I cut the crown off, then cut in half and then whack the crap out of the outside of it with a wooden spoon to get the arils out. hehehe
I picked up a pom the other day too! I think I am going to cut it open tonight. First timer here! :)
Great song by the way, but sorry to hear about your connection to it. Hope you feel better soon! :)
I am glad that you have found some possible remedies to help you out.
I love the pairing for the bow tie pasta. It looks so flavorful!
I love pmegranates now that I know how to cut them, LOL!! Your meals look so yoummy. By the way, I found this blog by way of another blog and I love it!
I picked up a POM and that brochure at the store today, too!
Sorry you're feeling so dizzy - I hope it goes away soon.
Ive demolished a lot of poms in my early days LOL Geez they are so delicious!
That settles it. I am buying a pomegranate. I am embarrassed to admit, I haven't bought one of these things in decades because I didn't have the first clue how to get into the thing. I was trying to pick seeds out with my fingers and getting sticky and frustrated! But now I know.
Sorry about the vertigo Marissa. I really hope those remedies will help you out.
I've had that song in my head too - and it was just on the radio!
Good luck with the vertigo, but I admire your attitude about maintaining fitness even if you can't run.

Okay, I just realized that I have been opening pomegranates all wrong for years... Thanks for the info!
I really hope the vertigo exercises will help you! Hang in there!
Thanks for the pomegranate tutorial. I've been doing all wrong!!
I've never tried pomegranete before.....It looks delicious! I was curious; How do you make almond butter? I've tried before, but it didn't turn out right. Do you think you could post instructions?
ohh so sorry to hear about your vertigo! my friend had that in college and the doc told her to have people throw her against the bed, because it shakes up the coclia in the ear canals...anyyyways your pom looks fabulous!! love the step by step book :)
That pasta looks so good! Thanks for the pom tutortial! I've never cut one!
A coworker had cheeze-its at work today. I may have snuck a few and thought of you!
Sorry about your vertigo but am glad you are being so pro-active about ways to handle it. You have a great attitude! Hang in there!
I swear I am so spoiled: I buy my arils already de-ariled :-) at Trader Joe's. Maybe I better get whole pom and teach myself a new trick ;-)
Feel better soon! I love pomegranates, too.
Thanks for the lesson on the pom, I've been cutting it in half and soaking it in water, but that looks like a better idea!
Sorry about the vertigo, I hope the exercises work for you.
Homemade almond butter rocks! I need to do that more often!
Thank you for the POM directions. I've been wondering all all week. (seriously)
And I see pizza.
I think we have a lot in common, I too have struggled/cursed at the vertigo. As a nurse I have researched and tried different techniques, but it always seems to pop up at the most inopportune times!
Also, your goat cheese pizza and pasta look heavenly, and as for your love of cheez-its, I have to ask have you tried Kashi cheese crackers??? They are fabulous,I love them!
I enjoy reading your blog, and wish I had a solution to the vertigo, because It sucks for me too :) Let me know if you find something that works, I have tried home exercises as well as physical therapy, left the PT office too many times puking my guts out and decided to quit! Good luck
Marisa, forgive me if I sound like a complete idiot, but you're post about pomegranate sounded so good. So this week I bought some. I've never, ever had it before. I followed your directions, but confused a bit. Once I get the arils out, I popped one in my mouth. Tastes good, but seems like it's just a seed with a little bit of fruit around it. Do you eat that little seed too or spit it out? I know, I know, I sound like a fool, but it's just that I've never had it before. :)
Reen, don't apologize! I know it is kinda a weird fruit! Yes, you did everything right and it is just like you said, a seed with some fruit around it. You do eat the seed and all. The crunch grows on you and the fruit part pops in your mouth! I have never been a fan of seeded grapes which these remind me of, but for some reason, the pomegranate seed doesn't bother me!
If you're not sure about eating them straight up, try them in a baked good. Maybe the texture is softer? Not sure, never tried that but I have seen others use them in muffins, breads and pancakes.
