Routine Eats

Gosh, it’s so hard to get back into a routine after being away for a weekend!  I spent most of the morning on the computer between blogging and catching up on blog reading.  My Google reader was filled to the brim!  You guys sure have been busy :)  Anyway, I did take a break for a quick, but hearty breakfast – Banana Walnut Breakfast Cookie topped with PB2…

I submitted the cookie recipe for Jen’s e-cookbook, so you will get a chance to try these and a slew of other awesome blogger recipes when her book debuts!

The morning and early afternoon flew by and before I knew it, lunch was calling.  Actually, the daughters were screaming calling “we’re starving!!!”, so I broke from the chores and got lunch going.  I had planned on using my leftover salad from Lettuce Head, but it was way too wilted to eat on its own.  I guess it didn’t transport well;  I had hopes it would be okay since there wasn’t dressing on it, but no dice ( no casino pun intended!).  In the interest of “saving” it, I picked through the good stuff and added it to a wrap made with turkey, wasabi mustard and rolled in a Joseph’s Lavash Bread

I had some carrots to go with it and for more crunch, some Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips

They definitely lived up  to their name :)

The remainder of the day was spent at the dentist for the daughters and haircut appointments.  We didn’t get in until dinner!  While out, I did snack on a Very Cherry Larabar that I had in my handbag.

Dinner had to be quick, so it was pizza breads for the husband and daughters ( rolls spread with sauce and cheese – run under the broiler) and I nuked up my dinner of leftover Chicken Thighs with Olives and Tomato Sauce  which I served over orzo…

I love this dish!

Later, I also grabbed 4 Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Crisps, mainly for noshing purposes.  I wasn’t hungry for food, I was just “looking” for something.  My nerves are getting the best of me.  Did I mention that my first 5K is THIS SATURDAY???!!!  Freaking OUT.  Anyway, before bed I took a few minutes to talk to myself and made a commitment to myself that I would eat as healthy as possible this week so that I can feel strong and energized for the race.  I also committed that I would feed myself what I craved so that I wouldn’t use my anxiety as an excuse to binge or overeat.  What I mean by that  is sometimes I really want some carbs (mainly in the form of a bread-type item) for breakfast, lunch and dinner!  I usually talk myself out of having that many, even though I chose whole wheat or whole grain products, I guess I still carry that old “too many carbs are bad” mentality.  So this week, if I want to have it, I’m doin’ it!

Hope you all have a great day!

Question of the Day:  Could you share some race tips for first time racers (i.e.  what to bring, eat, wear, drug yourself with)?  YIKES!!!!

My advice for your first 5k is dont do anything different. Eat what you normally eat prior to a run. Wear what you normally wear etc... You never want to try anything new on race day. Don't start out too fast. You will be surprised by your time - the adrenaline will get you going :)

Most importantly HAVE FUN!

hey marisa! just catching up on your last couple posts. i LOVE the bathroom at chickie and petes! so cute. and the calamari salad looks excellent. i have NEVER heard of a calamari salad, such a great idea. i wish i could find lavash bread around here, your wrap looks incredible. i am so wrap-obsessive. i didn't do anything special for my first race.. but i should have taken some ibuprofen beforehand. i did that on my next race and my joints were happier! xoxoxo to you!

I love the peanut butter/banana on toast abt 1- 1 1/2 hrs. before the race. Also, remember this isn't about comparing to anyone else in the race or in the blog world. This is about how far you've come...this is about doing your best. Just enjoy it. :)

Hi Marisa - I just did my first 5K this past weekend and it was a blast. I hope you love the experience as much as I did. Something that was extremely helpful for me was great music on my IPod throughout the race. I played a combo of fun, upbeat music, as well as inspirational songs for when the run got tough - I think it got me through the race 100%! Hope you have a great time :)

I crave carbs like crraazzzzyyy all the time. Glad to know I'm not alone. I also seem to want sweet meals (oats, yogurt, fruit, granola...etc.)most of the time.

No race advice for you, I'm still in awe that there are people who run for fun. Pure torture IMO. But don't let my opinion affect you - I'm sure you'll rock it!

What I do is make sure I don't go out too fast. I tend to do that and then I'm sucking air at the end of the race as old people pass me by!!

Also, just try and keep to your usual routine. Take the day off the day before the race, and warm up properly.

It's a lot of fun - you will be surprised how easy and exciting it is!!

Don't worry about the 5k too much. I usually eat a banana and oatmeal before my runs, but it's usually a good hour or more before the run. don't eat too heavy. Drink some water but don't go crazy or you will have to pee! And wear what you are comfortable to run in.

Basically don't do anything different than what you are used to training with.

I'm so excited for you and your 5k! I remember when you were just wanting to start running outside and you couldn't get into it! Now look at you! A 5K! Congrats! You will have a great time!

I love all the race day advice! I agree, don't do anything unusual and make sure your clothes are comfortable (including your underwear - it's a long story...).

Other than that, HAVE FUN!!! That's what it's all about! :)

Oh yes, food should taste good sweet potato chips are THE best!!! You always make the yummiest lookin’ food, from breakfast cookies to wasabi wraps (how creative!!), to that gourmet lookin’ dinner. Your girls are LUCKY!!
Try not to worry too much about the race! While I can’t give you advice in that department, I can wish you the best of luck and to make sure your nerves don’t get the better of you!! Go Marisa!

my advice for th e 5k would be to pace yourself in a race it is very easy to start off fast because of all the adrenaline you will be feeling but trust me, it is best to pace yourself and start out at a good solid pace. Don't eat too much fiber before your race or your tummy will not be happy with you! You will do amazing!

your wrap looks great! I am a wrap eater with the josephs lavash almost daily!

Hmmmmmm, 1st race advise!!! Here is mine:

1) Drink plenty of water the day before the race.
2) Eat 1/2 a Cliff Bar or peanut butter on one slice of toasted wheat bread and some water about 30-60 minutes prior to the race.
3) Bring your "tunes"!
4) Chew gum, I find this keeps my mouth from getting dry during the race or any runs for that matter.
5) Don't start to fast and then slightly increase your speed as the race proceeds.
6) Conserve some energy for the final sprint, I always forget to do this and then can't race for the finish line.......

Thanks for all the great advice, everyone! I will definitely make sure I don't wear anything new and I'll try my best not to start off too fast. I know my heart will be beating out of my chest as it is, so I'll try to keep myself at a good pace!
