Blah, Blah, Blah

I know you guys are probably tired of hearing me complain about the morning, so here it is…my last one…why does it have to be dark in the morning??!!  Okay, I’m moving on… :)

I was looking forward to another Banana Oat Smoothie

Yummy and filling!  I added a few strawberries to this one, too…

Then, it was off to the gym.  I wasn’t feeling it, though.  Not so gung ho!  But, once I hopped on the elliptical and started watching my boyfriend, I felt better.  He did an interesting segment on metabolism.  Did anyone catch that?  He said that keeping your heart rate lower(less intensity) and exercising for a longer period of time is what burns the fat.  I didn’t realize that!  I always thought pumping up your heart rate through the roof is what burns it, but he says elevating your heart rate like that dips into your sugar (glycogen/carb stores) because your body needs the energy to power the intensity of the workout.  I guess that’s okay, too because it burns calories, but it seems that the slow burn is better for fat loss.  Hmmm… I may try that experiment.  I have noticed my hunger levels/cravings going way up since I’ve been sweating it at the gym.  Maybe I’ll try not to huff it so much with the cardio stuff and keep it going longer.  And I love doing the weights, too, so that counts for the slow burn also.  We’ll see;  you know I love my experiments!

I was ready for lunch a little on the early side.  I decided to use up some of the leftover Italian Chicken Salad (thankfully, I halved the recipe or I would have had tons!)  and made a wrap with it using a Joseph’s Lavash Flatbread and had some baby carrots on the side…

I still wanted some crunch, so I broke open these new multigrain POPchips that I picked up at Target…

s17 007

They were pretty good;  like a thin rice cake.  I liked the cheddar flavor, but overall, I think I like the potato variety they make better.  Didn’t stop me from eating a good sized serving, though…

When the daughters came home, I doled out the snacks.  I did some extra snacking myself.  Just picking here and there, a few of this and a few of that.  It was mindless, so mindless in fact, that I can’t even remember what I ate!  I wasn’t feeling my best, physically – kinda achy and just blah, so I think I was just “feeding” to try to feel better.  Uh, that doesn’t work.  Just sayin’.

Tacos were on the menu for dinner.  I finally came across ground chicken breast in the supermarket (only have ever seen the regular ground chicken), so I thought it would be great for tacos.  I wasn’t much in the mood for anything after noshing in the afternoon, but I decided to make a Chicken Taco Salad to get in some extra green stuff.  In the mix…

  • romaine and boston lettuce
  • tomato
  • red pepper rings
  • 2% shredded cheese
  • 1/2 c. cooked ground chicken breast (w/taco seasoning)
  • 2 tbsp. guacamole
  • 2 tbsp. salsa

It was very tasty, but I didn’t quite finish it all since I was full and feeling yuck…

Tomorrow’s another day!!!  Hope you had a great one!

ONE GOOD THING: Ummmmm, I got nothin’.  No!!!  Now, that’s not positive!  Okay, I slapped myself upside the head.  Let me try it again…

ONE GOOD THING:  I got in a good workout at the gym, even though I didn’t feel that into it :D  Better, right?!

Question(s) of the Day:  What do you think about Dr. Oz’s metabolism boosting info?  When you workout, do you go for the slow burn or the "pumped up” heart rate?

I wish I had seen that episode. I've always heard, and this is probably wrong, that after 20 minutes then that is when your body really starts "shedding" the fat. Maybe that's kinda what he was saying? I'm going to have to see if I can see if they are going to air that episode again!

Glad you had a good workout.

Hmmm seems I heard that somewhere before, like slow and easy wins the 75 lb weightloss race!

Dr Oz is following in the footsteps of a lot of authorities and studies that show it is more affective to do low intensity work outs like walking for fat loss. There are many other benefits health wise as well. Running is far from the most affective or healthiest thing you can do to your body ( risk of injury, joint damage and more). 40 minutes walking seems to be the goal to shoot for in fat burning affect.

That flatbread looks delicious! And the sandwich too. Did you get the Flatbread at Trader Joe's?

I try to mix up high intensity and low intensity cardio workouts. For one, my weak ankle can't handle too much high intensity. I usually do two (quite short) runs per week, and the rest is either the elliptical, stair climber, or walks.

Good job for going back and tellin us that ONE GOOD THING....your exercise is a GREAT thing...your so dedicated! :)

I am a slow walker...lol I have back problems that prevent me from going all hardcore with the exercise. So I hope your BF is speaking the truth! :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is tired of the dark mornings...makes me want to hit the snooze at 5:30am...
I saw dr. Oz yesterday too...it makes sence to me what he said. I have heard that it takes 10 minutes of cardio before your body starts using stored fat too.
Love how you post and take pics of what you are eatting..I'm in a rut lately and looking for new twists on things :)

Interesting! I recently got a Polar F6 and was playing around w/ it after a long, brisk walk the other day and realized it tells you how many fat calories you burned of the total. Do you have a HRM? I love mine. It has completely reinvigorated my workouts because I am constantly challenging myself to "get to a certain number of calories burned" or "get my heartrate a bit higher"

Sorry for the tangent ...

I like both. When I am crunched for time, I do a 20 minute HITT workout but when I have time, I love 60 minute brisk walks pushing the girls in the stroller :-)

Your wrap looks really tasty!

Good to know that popchips are making multigrain varieties now.

I caught that Dr. Oz segment out the corner of my eye. I have heard that the slow burn is what eliminates the fat, but when I'm doing cardio at the gym, I have a hard time slowing it down! For instance, a few months ago, I tried to do the "Fat Burn" setting on the eliptical but my heart rate kept elevating so much, the machine finally gave up and just switched to manual setting! I guess to feel like I've worked out, I need to be huffing and puffing, sweaty, and red in the face!

your chicken taco salad looks great, that's a good idea to put 1/2 of the taco shell on the side! i've been watching dr oz's show a little, i see that he recommends wearing a pedometer and walking 10,000 steps a day so i finally took my ped out of hiding again! :)

Love your taco salad! I have read that slow and longer does burn the fat, but you do need to exercise hard once in a while - I wish I would have seen that show!

I've only seen a few minutes of him on Oprah before.. don't watch much TV.. but I do both high/low intensity. My daytime workout is high... if I workout at night, I do low intensity. So the best of both worlds... ;)

Your eats look fabulous, yum! Keep up the great work!

It's funny the Dr. Oz would mention that, as new studies have shown that low and slow isn't necessarily the way to go. Doing interval training is actually much more effective at fat burning and metabolism boosting.

When I took a weight loss boot camp almost 3 years ago, they had us doing HIIT. It worked, and the weight came off. Definitely do some research on interval training.
