Breakups Are Hard

I feel like crap today. I'm going through a breakup and it's been rough. Me and coffee have had a love/hate relationship for a while now. It wasn't love at first sight although, it did give me jitters every time I got a little ;P But now, the love is gone. It's been doing me wrong, causing me major pain in the heart, throat and gut. Why, oh why does it have to be this way? I tried to get together with it's lesser version - Trader Joe's French Roast Low Acid. We liked each other at first, but it turned out to be just like all the others. So, I must breakup with coffee. It seems necessary. My body is achy and yearning for it, but I have to let it go. *sigh* Parting is such sweet sorrow...

This morning, I had...tea...

I added some milk, no sweetener. It was a milked-up mate...

It sucked.

I was really in the mood for eggs today. A real whole egg. Heck, I can't have coffee, so I might as well enjoy something! I served it over a piece of Trader Joe's Organic Spelt Bread (toasted)...

I still wanted something more. I was feeling hungry right off the bat today. I decided on a pack of Emerald Cocoa Roast Almonds...

These are great and had just the right amount of crunch that I was looking for...

I putzed around all morning having my own" farewell to coffee "pity party. I finally decided to head to the basement for a workout. I didn't feel up to any running/elliptical since my hips are still sore. Getting old sucks burnt coffee grinds ;P Anyway, I decided to do weights and ab work. It was a nice, no hip-impact 30 minute workout.

When lunch time rolled around, I was ready for it! I really wanted pasta and heck, since I'm not having coffee, I might as well have something I really want! I made my own boxed-style mac and cheese using 2 oz. Ronzoni Smart Taste elbow macaroni, 2 tbsp. natural cheese powder (bought this in a bulk foods store) and a few tbsp. milk. I cooked up a batch of fresh mixed veggies to go with it...

cheesy...like me...

Unfortunately, today was not a day of listening to my body. My body wanted coffee, but instead it got lots of snacky snacks. I just wanted to feel full today. Satisfied didn't seem good enough. So, I munched on a pretzel...

Then more pretzels (x3!!!) coated in chocolate! Heck, if I can't have coffee...

I had to lie down after that. The daughters and I cuddled up and watched some bad TV (Wife Swap).

I had no big plans for dinner, so everyone agreed on breakfast for dinner. I made cheese omelettes with a side salad. Eggscellent...

I did get a small burst of energy for some house cleaning after dinner. That's a little better! Maybe this breakup won't be so bad after all =)

I leave you with a Question of the Day: What do you drink- coffee or tea?

You can get through this, M.! I know you can!!! You've already kicked soooo many other rocks out of the path. This is just one more. You'll feel so much better! Keep us posted.

I had to quit eating artificial sweeteners a couple of years ago due to some horrible side effect they had been causing for years (and I didn't know that's what caused the pain). Anything that ends in "ol" (soribitol especially). The BIG culprit was aspartame. I cannot tolerate it at all. I even had surgery to find out why I was in so much lower pelvic pain all the time. When nothing showed up on the female end of things...all arrows pointed to my gut. So we began the process of cutting out certain foods and narrowing down what caused the pain. I was OK with Splenda for a while, but I just don't want to take any chances so that took a hike out of my life over a month ago. I don't even miss it now. I take that back. I miss sugar free pancake syrup. However, I only eat that like 5 times a year. So....I can deal. lol

I have one cup of coffee in the morning to get me going, and then I move on to hot water, which I sip all day.

I love coffee, but I try to drink only one cup in the morning. Well, sometimes I'll also have one in the afternoon, like today...

But you can totally get off coffee. I used to drink a lot of coffee and cut back gradually. In fact, for a few weeks last year, I didn't drink coffee. It was tough at first but doable. I started drinking coffee again since I don't really have any side effects (that I can identify)...

You can do it! :)

I don't drink coffee or tea. I guess I drink... water. xD And occasionally seltzer. Hm. I think I need to expand my fluids here! Are those pretzels the sprouted whole grain ones from the Unique company? I thought I recognized the texture. They're good, but the Extra Dark splits are the best.

I drink coffee, and I might have some good news for you. I had the same problem with coffee until I started making it in a French Press instead of a drip coffee maker. Coffee was not the problem, but rather the mold that accumulates in the little rubber hose from the reservoir and the heating element. Since switching to a french press, absolutely NO problem with coffee. Check out http://coffeegeek.com/guides/presspot to see what they look like and how to use them. I found mine at Meijers.

When I first started doing WW, I quit getting my morning caffeine through soda. After a couple days with just water I realized that I needed caffeine in the morning. So, I switched to iced tea with splenda. Works for me!

Marisa, I am so, so sorry to hear about your "break-up". I give you a lot of credit though. I don't think I could do it. I am addicted to my coffee. I do make half decaf, but then again, I drink the entire pot, and then go back for another cup at 2:00 every afternoon.

Hang in there though! We all know you can do it.

P.S. the mac and cheese looks delish!

Awww, so sorry! You are much better without that stinking coffee anyway. He'd just break your heart. hehehe

Hope you get over the rough patch of 'detox' soon.

I don't drink coffee or tea. Never have. I also gave up caffeinated drinks. I've started taking B Complex and that seems to help give me that burst of energy that caffeine used to.

Good luck!

Coffee!!! one cup in the morning. I use to run to startbucks in the afternoon to get a grand nonfat caramel frap BUT thats not a healthy option. So I went to Tevana and picked up oolong tea. It really works! Gives me my caffenine kick and stops me from shoveling crap in my mouth at 3PM.

Oh, I shed a tear for you. I am a coffee drinker, but lately, the past week or so, it's been upsetting my stomach. I've been thinking of giving it up....but I just don't know. I'm curious to see how you are going to do with it. I could do tea but I would have to either have splenda or a little bit of sugar. Maybe you could try that Truvia stuff.

Good luck!

I am a coffee drinker - I love it hot, cold, in latte's, or fraps - it doesn't matter. But now that I am expecting, I've had to give up my obession, so I can totally relate to your struggle. Hang in there, we can do this!

I love my coffee but when I was eating right and exercising, which I haven't been doing for about 3 months I was really into tea with honey and lemon. I noticed that when I drink coffee it seems to stimulate my appetite, or maybe it is all in my head. LOL
When I have leftover coffee sometimes I make iced coffee in the afternoon.
Have a great day.

Oh how I feel your pain. I used to drink several espresso a day and gave it up because of side effects. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I sleep better, feel great in the mornings, lost weight, my moods are more stable and consistent. I was really an unhappy person when I was addicted to coffee. Now I have espresso on Saturday mornings to give me a day to recover and to make sure I don't get addicted again.
Along the way I tried green tea, teechino (herbal coffee for those days when you want that coffee mug feeling), and now I've settled on herbal tea -- no sugar, no caffeine, tastes great and more exciting than plain water.
Although I feel better than ever, I smell or see coffee around me every day and I always want it. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement! I'm REALLY trying!! Almost caved when I longingly looked at the coffee pot this morning, but my burning throat reminded me that it's the right thing to do!

Heather - thanks so much for your story! I ditched Splenda a few weeks ago and so far don't miss it much!

TastyHealthFood - yep, they are the Unique brand. Really good!

JuJu - I was looking into that Teecino. Is it any good? Does it taste like coffee???

i drink coffee, probably too much. i wonder what would happen if i tried to breakup with it. props to you! i loved the "it sucked" part, i laughed out loud.

I drink both coffee and tea. Iced tea when I want something light and refreshing, especially now when it is SUPER hot. Hot tea when it is cold and I want some comfort. Coffee when I am on the go.

Try the Tejava tea at Trader Joe's. Only $1.19 for 1 liters. Very refreshing and strong. Hope the caffeine is strong enough to replace your coffee.
